About da Vinci® Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cardiac Conditions

Two most common conditions that can affect your heart are mitral valve prolapse and coronary artery disease. If you have one of these conditions, and medicine, lifestyle changes or other treatments do not ease your symptoms, your doctor may suggest surgery.

The method of heart surgery your doctor uses may include: open surgery through a large chest incision (sternotomy) or minimally invasive surgery through a few small incisions between your ribs (also called thoracoscopic surgery). Surgeons use long instruments, including a thoracoscope (long thin tube) which has a light and tiny camera at the end. Images from the camera are sent to a video monitor to guide doctors as they operate.

If you are a candidate for minimally invasive surgery, ask your doctor about da Vinci Cardiac Surgery.
